Zabbix at All Things Open 2025: Linux Command-Line Tips and Tricks

Being a part of the open-source movement, with its emphasis on openness, transparency, and cooperation, is a big part of what makes Zabbix unique in the world of monitoring and observability solutions. “When I started Zabbix, I think I was greatly helped by the fact that there was nothing like it available on the market,” says Alexei Vladishev, Zabbix’s Founder and CEO. “There were some commercial solutions, but they were in a very early stage of development, and they also tended to be prohibitively expensive. This gave an open-source company like Zabbix a huge lane to travel in.”

At All Things Open 2025, Zabbix Senior C Developer Vladimir Levijev’s presentation will feature another titan of the open-source world – Linux. Entitled “Linux Command-Line Tips and Tricks,” the presentation is designed to serves as a comprehensive introduction to working with the Linux command line. It will start with an overview of the Linux operating system and its origins, including the development of the Linux kernel by Linus Torvalds and its integration with GNU components, led by Richard Stallman. The presentation will also introduce multiple Linux distributions like Debian, Mint, and Manjaro, emphasizing the importance of the open-source community and the role of tools such as the GNU Bash shell in daily command-line operations.

The talk will then shift to practical usage of the shell and particularly Bash, explaining key features like environment variables, configuration files, aliases, and history handling. It will include helpful demonstrations of common commands, environment setups, and navigation techniques within the shell. What’s more, it will also illustrate some pitfalls and solutions (e.g., variable scope, directory navigation) and delve into keyboard shortcuts, file handling, and user-related shell commands.

Finally, the presentation will get into scripting with Bash, starting with basic scripts and extending to more advanced constructs such as parameter parsing, error handling, and debugging tools. A dedicated section will cover some Bash idioms, including randomization, safe file removal, history expansions and string manipulations. The focus throughout is on empowering users to be more efficient, cautious, and confident in the Linux environment through clear examples and practical tips.

We’re looking forward to seeing you there!
