Microfrontends at Fastly: Shipping user experience, not the org chart – Bekah Suttner Cheek
In 2023, Fastly’s frontend organization had outgrown our architecture. Our teams were shipping code quickly and independently but users experienced inconsistent behavior as they crossed team boundaries that should have been invisible. We needed a way to maintain team autonomy and velocity while prioritizing user experience. For us, the answer was microfrontends.
Rearchitecting our system empowered teams to ship autonomously without exposing internal team boundaries in application behavior. In this talk, you’ll hear our rationale for building this system, learn how to make an informed decision on adopting this kind of change, and find out how it’s going after more than a year of use. We’ll dig into the lessons we’ve learned about abstracting away complexity, planning for incremental adoption, and prioritizing user and developer experience. You’ll leave with an understanding of what microfrontends are, when to consider them, and a mental rubric for evaluating frameworks.
